Magnetic Pedal Rebuild Instructions
If your pedals are getting noisy or feeling worn, it might be time for some routine magnetic pedal maintenance. These REMtech Pedal service instructions walk you through how to give your pedals a little love so you can get back to riding smooth and confidently.
Tools:
- 6mm Hex wrench – end cap removal
- 8mm Hex wrench – pedal removal and use as a punch
- 8mm Socket – spindle nut and washer removal
- Tweezers or flat-head screwdriver – seal removal
- Small flat-head screwdriver or nylon putty knife – seal installation
- Thread tap bit: ½’ (pedal body) or ⅜’ (REMtech magnet body) – igus® bushing removal
- REMtool bushing press + 8mm punch
- Rubber Mallet
Supplies:
- Grease
- Degreaser or isopropyl alcohol
- Shop Rags or Towels
Parts –
REMfresh Kit:
- 2 main igus® bushings (12mm OD)
- 4 REMtech body igus® bushings (10mm OD)
- 4 X-profile seals (REMtech body)
- 2 outer spindle seals
- 2 end caps
- 4 sealed cartridge bearings
- 2 spindle nuts and washers
Spindle Kit:
- 2 spindles, 2 nuts, 2 washers
Servicing Steps
Step 1: Remove Pedals
Remove both pedals from your bike using an 8mm hex wrench. Thoroughly clean old grease from the threads before proceeding.
Step 2: Remove End Caps
Using a 6mm hex wrench, remove the end cap from the pedal you’re servicing (Figure 4). Discard the old end cap – a new one is included in your REMfresh Kit.
Pro Tip: Service one pedal at a time. This prevents confusion and minimizes unwanted magnetic interaction between components.
Step 3: Prep to Remove Spindle
Insert the 8mm hex wrench fully into the spindle. Place the 8mm socket into the hole on the end cap side and engage the nut (Figure 5).
- R: (hex on the left side) Hold the 8mm hex steady and rotate the 8mm socket clockwise to loosen.
- L: (hex on the right side) Hold the 8mm hex steady and rotate the 8mm socket clockwise to loosen.
Pro Tip: Ensure the socket has a solid grip on the nut and the hex is fully inserted to avoid slipping or stripping. Keep the socket engaged until the nut is fully loosened so it doesn’t drop into the pedal body.
Step 4: Remove Spindle
Pull the spindle out along with the outer spindle seal (Figure 6). Use a small flat-head screwdriver to retrieve the washer from inside the pedal body. If the spindle feels stuck, use the flat-head screwdriver to shift the washer and free it.
Pro Tip: Thread the washer back onto the spindle and finger-tighten the nut to keep the hardware together and prevent losing small parts.
Identifying left vs. right spindles:
- R: Silver nut / smooth flare (Figure 7).
- L: Black nut / grooved flare (Figure 7).
Step 5: Remove Magnet Body
Hold the pedal body and lift it vertically away from the work surface, keeping one or two fingers on the magnet body to control it as it separates (Figure 8).
Safety Tip: Keep all metal objects well away from the magnet body during this step. The magnets are strong and will attract tools, hardware, and other pedal components.
Step 6: Identify Your Pedal Version
Before servicing, confirm which version of the AVERY REMtech pedal you have, as pin counts differ:
- V1: 15 traction pins per side.
- V2: 12 traction pins per side.
Step 7: Magnet Body Servicing – Remove Seals & Bushings
Use tweezers to carefully remove the old X-profile seals from the magnet body (Figure 9a). Wipe away all the old grease with a rag. Insert the ⅜’ thread tap bit into each igus® bushing and back it out to remove (Figures 9b and 9c). Clean all surfaces thoroughly with degreaser or isopropyl alcohol.
Step 8: Mag Body Service: Install New Bushings & Seals
From your REMfresh Kit, take the two 10mm OD igus® bushings (the smaller of the two sizes). Press each one into the magnet body using the REMtool bushing press (Figures 10a – 10d).
Pro Tip: Install the bushing chamfered side first – the chamfered edge goes into the magnet body to guide alignment during installation (Figure 10c).
Once the bushings are seated, install the 2 new X-profile seals onto the magnet body, ensuring they sit flat in their grooves (Figures 10e and 10f).
Safety Tip: Rebuild one pedal at a time to prevent mag bodies from sticking to each other. Place mag body away from your working area to prevent it from grabbing your tools or pedals.
Step 9: Pedal Body Service – Remove Bushings, Bearings & Clean
Take a ½’ thread tap bit into the main 12mm OD igus® bushing (Figure 11a) and back it out to remove (Figure 11b). Wipe away all old grease. Flip the pedal to the crank (outer) side, insert an 8mm punch (or 8mm hex wrench) through the pedal body until it contacts the cartridge bearings (Figure 11d), and tap them out gently with the rubber mallet (Figure 11e). Clean all surfaces with degreaser or isopropyl alcohol.
Step 10: Pedal Body Service – Install New Bushings & Bearings
Take one 12mm OD igus® bushing and insert it into the pedal body from the crank side.
Pro Tip: Install the bushing chamfered side first – the chamfered edge enters the pedal body first for proper seating.
Press the bushing fully into place using the REMtool bushing press (Figure 12a – 12c). Flip the pedal body over and install the 2 sealed cartridge bearings one at a time (Figure 12d), tapping each gently into place with a rubber mallet and 8mm punch (or 8mm hex wrench) (Figure 12e and 12f).
Step 11: Spindle Preparation
Clean all the old grease from the spindle. Slide a new outer spindle seal onto the spindle (Figure 13a). Apply grease to the spindle body (Figure 13b), and add a small amount of grease to the bushings in both the pedal body and magnet body (Figure 13c).
- R: Smooth cone.
- L: Grooved cone.
Pro Tip: If the spindle shows signs of oxidation or surface corrosion, lightly polish it with a scouring pad or emery cloth until smooth.
Step 12: Reassemble
Carefully seat the magnet body into the center of the pedal body, ensuring the X-profile seals remain flat and don’t roll up during installation (Figure 14a).
Pro Tip: If the magnet body is difficult to slide in, apply a small amount of isopropyl alcohol to the outer surface of the X-profile seals to ease assembly. If a seal has rolled or shifted, use a fine nylon (non-magnetic) putty knife to gently flatten it back into place before proceeding.
Insert the spindle (Figure 14b), then reinstall the washer (Figure 14c), followed by the nut (Figure 14d). Tighten to approximately 8-10 Nm (Figure 14e).
- R: Tighten the 8mm socket counterclockwise while holding the 8mm hex clockwise.
- L: Tighten the 8mm socket clockwise while holding the 8mm hex counterclockwise.
Step 13: Final Touch
Apply a small amount of grease around the nut and cartridge bearing area (Figure 15b). Thread in the new end cap and tighten to approximately 3-4 Nm (Figure 15c).
Repeat Steps 2-13 for the second pedal.
When to Service Pedals:
We recommend servicing your REMtech pedals at least once per year, or any time you notice reduced spin, grinding, or unusual noise.
